How to bet

The process of making a bet varies, depending on whether you are making a bet with an individual bookmaker, at a betting shop, or over the internet.

With an individual bookmaker, you would select the one offering the best odds on your selection and approach him. You then state clearly the number of the selection, the amount staked and the type of bet. The bookmaker takes the money, repeats the bet and will then give you a receipt, which you should immediately check for accuracy. If you win, you should return to the bookmaker as soon as possible after the result is announced. If you lose, you should retain your ticket until after the weigh-in, in case the result of the race is changed.

The process is similar but a little different in a betting shop, where you will find numerous stations kitted out with betting slips and pens or pencils. You should write your selection, the amount staked and the type of bet on the slip and take it to the counter. The details will be checked with you after which you hand over your money. The betting slips are normally made of carbon copy paper, so that you can retain your original slip, while the betting shop keeps a copy. You won’t have to pick up any winnings immediately after victory, but you should check the terms of the bookmaker before deciding to go away for 6 months, leaving you whopping winning ticket at home.

With online betting, the system is obviously different again. First of all, you need to have set up an online account with the bookmaker. There are normally bonuses for signing up, so it can be prudent to open a number of different accounts. You will need to register and deposit funds before making a bet. There is less flexibility online, so you can only make bets that are on offer and listed on the website. To make a bet you simply choose a selection, enter the amount you wish to bet and then confirm. The amount will be deducted from your balance automatically, and you will only be able to make the bet if your account has sufficient credit. If you lose, nothing happens and the bet is closed. If you win, your account will be credited with the winnings automatically.
